Moving doesn’t have to be a chaotic mess of cardboard and tape. With a little strategy and the right approach, you can pack your entire home efficiently, keep your sanity intact, and make unpacking a breeze.
Here are 12 pro-level tricks to streamline your next move:
1. Ditch the Cardboard, Go Plastic
Traditional cardboard boxes require endless rolls of tape, easily crush, and often end up in a landfill. Instead, opt for heavy-duty, stackable plastic rental totes. They are sturdier, eco-friendly, protect your belongings from moisture, and stack perfectly in the moving truck without shifting.
2. Pack an “Essentials Box” First
Imagine arriving at your new home late at night, exhausted, and having to dig through ten different boxes just to find your toothbrush. Pack a clearly labeled “Day One” box with everything you need for the first 24 hours: toiletries, pajamas, a change of clothes, phone chargers, basic tools, and toilet paper.
3. Use the “Russian Doll” Method
Don’t waste space moving empty containers. Fill your suitcases, laundry baskets, duffel bags, and even large cooking pots with smaller items like socks, dish towels, or spice jars.
4. Keep Clothes on Their Hangers
Don’t waste hours taking clothes off hangers, folding them into boxes, and re-hanging them later. Keep them right on the hangers! Group them together and pull a large, clean trash bag up from the bottom, tying the drawstrings around the hooks of the hangers. When you arrive, just hang them up and pull the bags off.
5. Color-Code by Room
Instead of writing descriptions on every box, use bright color-coded labels or tape for each room (e.g., Blue for Kitchen, Red for Master Bedroom, Green for Living Room). Stick the labels on the side of the totes, not the top, so you can still see the colors when they are stacked.
6. Take Photos of Electronic Setups
Before you unplug your TV, internet router, or desktop computer, take a quick picture of the back of the device. This gives you a visual cheat sheet of exactly where every cable and cord belongs when it’s time to set things back up.
7. Wrap Breakables in Your Linens
Save money on bubble wrap and packing paper by using what you already own. Wrap your plates, bowls, and delicate items in bath towels, sheets, pillowcases, and thick winter sweaters. You have to move your linens anyway—might as well make them do double duty!
8. Pack Plates Vertically
Speaking of plates, never stack them flat on top of each other. They are much more likely to crack under pressure that way. Instead, wrap them individually and line them up vertically, side-by-side, like records in a crate.
9. Use Plastic Wrap to Defeat Spills
To prevent shampoos, lotions, and cleaning supplies from leaking all over your boxes, unscrew the cap, place a small square of plastic cling wrap over the opening, and screw the cap back on over it.
10. Label Boxes on the Sides, Not the Tops
When boxes or totes are stacked on top of each other in the truck or your garage, you won’t be able to see the tops. Always write the room name and a quick list of contents on the side of the container so it’s visible at a glance.
11. Keep Hardware with Its Furniture
When taking apart beds, desks, or tables, put all the small screws, bolts, and brackets into a Ziploc bag. Tape that bag directly to a large piece of the disassembled furniture so the hardware never gets separated from the piece it belongs to.
12. Purge Before You Pack
The cheapest item to move is the one you don’t bring. Take time to declutter, donate, or sell items you haven’t used in the past year. Moving is the perfect fresh start—don’t spend time and energy packing things you’re just going to throw away later!
