Moving for the first time is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. Most first-time movers focus entirely on packing boxes and forget about the small details that can make or break moving day. Before you start filling containers, take a few minutes to work through this checklist. Your future self will thank you!
1. Create a Moving Budget
Moving expenses can add up quickly. Make a list of expected costs including supplies, transportation, utility deposits, and moving help–so there are no surprises.
2. Declutter Before You Pack
There’s no reason to pay to move things you no longer need. Donate, sell, or toss items that haven’t been used in the past year.
3. Measure Large Furniture (Avoid the “Pivot!” Moment)
Before moving day arrives, make sure your sofa, bed, and other large furniture pieces will fit through doors, hallways, and staircases. Trust me–you do not want to end up stuck on a landing yelliing “Pivot!” like Ross from Friends. Take measurements ahead of time.
4. Reserve Reusable Moving Totes Early
Don’t wait until the last minute to secure your packing supplies. Reusable moving totes from arrive ready to pack, stack perfectly, and eliminate the hassle of taping cardboard boxes.
5. Gather Packing Supplies
Stock up on tape (you won’t need it with moving totes!), markers, labels, packing paper, and protective wrapping before you begin.
6. Create a Packing Schedule
Packing always takes longer than expected. Break the project into manageable tasks and tackle one room at a time. Set a timer for 10 minutes. At the end of 10 minutes you can decide to keep going or take a break.
7. Label Everything Clearly
A well-labeled tote can save hours of frustration when unpacking. Avoid unpacking “Mystery Boxes”!
8. Pack Heavy Items in Small Containers
Books and tools become surprisingly heavy. Smaller containers are easier and safer to carry.
9. Take Photos of Electronics
Snap a quick photo (use your phone camera!) of cable connections can make setting up your television and computer much easier.
10. Pack a First-Night Essentials Tote
Include toiletries, medications, chargers, snacks, and a change of clothes so you don’t have to search through containers after a long day. If you have a suitcase with wheels, this is a great option to pack your Essential Items.
11. Change Your Address
Notify the post office, banks, insurance companies, and subscription services at least a week before moving day.
12. Schedule Utility Transfers
Make sure electricity, water, gas, and internet service are ready at your new home before you arrive.
13. Back Up Important Documents
Keep digital copies of important paperwork and store originals in a secure location. Again use your phone to snap a few pictures.
14. Protect Fragile Items
Use packing paper and padding to protect dishes, glassware, and sentimental items. Using towels and bedsheets is a great use of these items.
15. Confirm Moving Day Details
Double-check delivery schedules, moving assistance, and transportation arrangements one week before the move. Maybe give a 24-hour reminder to anyone that may need an extra reminder.
16. Set Aside Cleaning Supplies
You’ll likely need to clean both your old and new home. Pack these last, and unpack them first.
17. Keep Valuables With You
Jewelry, passports, medications, and important documents should never be packed in the moving truck. Keep these items in your vehicle. Do not put them on the moving truck!
18. Plan for Pets and Children
Moving day can be stressful for everyone. Arrange care or activities to keep them safe and occupied.
19. Do a Final Walk-Through
Check every closet, cabinet, shelf, and drawer before leaving your old home. You do not want to leave anything behind.
20. Give Yourself Grace
No move is perfect. Expect a few surprises and remember that every box unpacked brings you one step closer to feeling at home.
